Song 10: The Weakerthans – Leash
Artist: The Weakerthans
With my phone music library on shuffle, this song came on today while I was getting ready to leave work for home. I wrote a bit about “discovering” Jo The Weakerthans (and John K Samson’s solo work) a bit in my long post summing up the year in music. The short story is that Wade listened to them throughout the bike ride from time to time and my good friend Tom Dusome has been a long time fan and exposed me to some of their music in the past. It was only in 2017 that I really took the time to look with any real intention into the band. I’ve been pretty pleased with that decision since doing so. Messaging my friend Tom about my choice to use this song for the day he immediately replied with the lyrics that start off the song. I know he’s a huge Weakerthans/John K Samson fan so I suppose it shouldn’t be too surprising, but it was impressive to me nonetheless. Despite loving music, I’ve never found myself to be particularly good at recalling lyrics without having the music there to accompany it. Give me a live performance of a song I know and I’ll sing my whole through it though. Anyways, this certainly isn’t my favourite The Weakerthans song, but I definitely did enjoy it. Give it a listen.
My favourite lines from it were:
Teach me to wiggle my ears like that
Show me the scar that you got when you fell off your bike
Ask me the questions you never want answers to
We can re-write them however we like
365 New Tunes is a project inspired by a tweet from the band Stars on December 31st, 2017 encouraging people to listen to a new song every day of the next year.
RT if you promise to listen to a piece of music you have never heard before every single day in 2018.#musicsaveslives
